Gaston College, with campuses in Gaston and Lincoln Counties, is an open door, comprehensive, public community college that promotes lifelong learning and economic development through high quality educational programs and services. Gaston College is recognized as the college of choice for providing excellent student-centered programs and services and for providing proactive leadership in economic development that enriches the quality of life for the greater community. Gaston College just celebrated its fortieth year and has grown from its first classes offered in the basement of a local church to include two campuses, serving over 20,000 students each year. The new BioNetwork BioEd Center will offer employer-driven continuing education and training products to meet the current and future workforce needs of the biotechnology industry.

York Chester Middle School provides middle school students with the experiences necessary to ensure future success in learning, living and working in a diverse, global society. The York Chester School International Studies Program is modeled on the International Baccalaureate Curriculum Middle Years Program. This program is in the second year of an application process to achieve certification as an International Baccalaureate School - a distinct honor. The program is the first of its kind in Gaston County. Students commit to a rigorous and advanced program focusing on Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Spanish, and 2 electives, such as Band, Art, Life Skills, Physical Education and Health, Technology, and Business Applications. In addition to the above, students are involved in an Exploratory class to teach each student how to think "outside of the box."

The Gaston County Schools, in collaboration with various community agencies, are committed to offering all students a distinctive science and technology immersion academy, beginning at Grier Middle School and expanding to Ashbrook High School. The Grier Science and Technology Academy will begin with the 6th grade class of 2005. The first community partnership will be with the Schiele Museum of Natural History located next to the school. The Museum's collections, exhibits, scientists, and educators will play an important role in the Academy. Other community partnerships will be developed to further expand the resources available.

Piedmont Charter School provides a challenging academic curriculum. They provide an environment enabling student development of character, morals, and responsibility. A Charter School in North Carolina is a public school funded from public school funds that is operated by a private organization that has applied for and been granted a charter by the state of North Carolina. The Piedmont Charter School currently has classes for K-6th grade. These classes meet in a restored historic property, Central School. An expansion to include 7 - 12 grades is planned for 2005-2006.

St. Michael's is a Catholic Diocesan co-educational school for children Pre-Kindergarten through grade eight. First Wesleyan Christian School was established in 1971 by the First Wesleyan Church as a day care and kindergarten program that would prepare students both academically and spiritually through a Christ-honoring traditional curriculum. In the late 1970s the school began expanding into its current K-8 elementary program. FWCS aims to support and reinforce the spiritual values of the Christian home and local church.
