The Farmers Market is a partnership of the efforts of private citizens and the city of Gastonia.
The City of Gastonia has worked with the Gaston County Farmers Market Association, a non-profit group of citizens since the 1970s. The City has provided property for the market to operate, beginning with the area where the railroad trench is now located. From this beginning, the desire for a permanent home for the market grew, and as a result, the Mayor appointed a citizens board to look into the possibility of raising private funds to go with public funds for the use of constructing a building from which the market could operate. The City provided the former Love Park site for the permanent location of the market.
The Mayor appointed a standing City board, the Farmers Market Advisory Board, to oversee the building and operation of the Market. This Board created the Farmers Market Fund through the Community Foundation of Gaston County, whereby private citizens and businesses could make tax deductible donations to build the Market. The fund received donations of $100,000.00 to go toward the construction of the new facility.
The building was formally dedicated in 1995 and has space for twenty vendors. All sellers must have a certificate from their County Extension Agent. Additionally, sellers who wish to sell retail items must have purchase a City License and have a NC Tax Certificate.
Beginning in 1998, a portion of the vendors began honoring the WIC program coupons and this has increased the number of customers to the market.
