Originally constructed in 1922, the City of Gastonia water treatment facility currently processes about 5 billion gallons of high quality drinking water per year. In 1995, the City switched sources to Mountain Island Lake. This change enabled us to improve our treated water quality, while using less chemicals to treat the water. Subsequently, the cost of treatment is reduced.
The water treatment plant employs
23 people to manage and monitor the disinfection/coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation/filtration
process. This type of process has been shown to be most
efficient and effective for the treatment of surface waters such as Mountain
Island Lake. The end result is water which is conveniently "soft", fluoridated, and contains a mild chlorine
residual for a longer resistance against contamination.
The City of Gastonia Water Supply & Treatment Division is dedicated to providing a superior quality drinking water at a reasonable price to our customers, with a total commitment to the protection of the public health.
