The Gastonia Fire Department is dedicated to providing outstanding fire, rescue, and life safety services to the residents of Gastonia. To deliver these services, the department offers comprehensive programs for fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials mitigation, specialized rescue and extrication, fire code enforcement, fire prevention, and life safety education.
Our first firefighters were members of the volunteer company formed in 1900 with George G. Glenn as Chief. Equipment was scarce. The fire hose was wound on a small hand reel which had to be pushed or carried to the fire. In 1905, the City bought a team of "fine fire horses" and L. L. Jenkins donated a fire wagon and some harnesses. Today, we have eight (8) fire stations located throughout the City. Over 130 firefighters operate our state of the art fire suppression, ladder, rescue, and hazardous material vehicles.
